We spoke with Fabion Dorsey, a Casualty Underwriter in our Atlanta office, to talk about Black History Month and the importance of diversity in the workplace.
How did you begin your career in insurance?
I began my insurance career in January 1999. In the summer of 1998, I was a NAPSLO intern at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. I spent a month with Southern General Agency and one month with American Equity in Scottsdale, AZ, learning the day-to-day operations of associates in underwriting, marketing, claims, and administration. After graduating in December 1998, I was hired by American Equity.
What advice would you give someone trying to get into underwriting or the insurance industry in general?
Breaking into underwriting or the insurance industry can be challenging but rewarding. Here are what I consider to be the three top steps to consider:
- Education and Training: Pursue a degree in business, finance, economics, insurance, or related fields. Consider obtaining certifications like the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.
- Gain Experience: Look for internships or entry-level positions in insurance companies, brokerage firms, or underwriting agencies. Customer service or administration roles can provide valuable insight into the industry.
- Networking: Attend industry events, join professional associations, and connect with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn. Building relationships can lead to mentorship opportunities and job referrals.
The insurance industry plays a critical role in the economy, providing protection and stability to individuals and businesses. With dedication and the right approach, you can build a successful career in underwriting or insurance.
What does diversity, inclusion, and belonging mean to you?
Diversity, inclusion, and belonging are fundamental principles that promote equity, fairness, and opportunity for all employees. It places an emphasis on creating groups and support for underrepresented employees, fostering a culture of accountability and allyship throughout the organization.
Why do you think diversity in the workplace is important to the success of an organization?
Diversity in the workplace is important to the success of an organization. By prioritizing diversity, inclusion and belonging, we create a more equitable and vibrant workplace. I believe this allows us to drive innovation, creativity and performance that ultimately leads to greater success.
Who is a figure in Black history that is an inspiration to you and why?
Marcus Garvey is a figure in Black history who inspires me. Born in 1887, he was inspired by the teachings of Booker T. Washington and the Pan-African movement, which advocated for the unity and empowerment of people of African descent worldwide. Garvey promoted economic independence, cultural pride, and a greater connection of people of African descent. His ideas sparked hope and mobilized millions, leaving a lasting resilience and empowerment in the fight against racism and oppression.
